340B Pharmacy Program

WHAT IS THE 340B PHARMACY PROGRAM?

The 340B Program is a federal government program created in 1992 that requires drug manufacturers to provide discounted outpatient pharmaceuticals to providers serving indigent patients.  The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the primary federal agency for improving access to health care services for people who are uninsured, isolated or medically vulnerable. HRSA has oversight of the 340B program through the Office of Pharmacy Affairs (“OPA”).

340B PROGRAM PARTICIPATION

Eligible entities must register and be enrolled with the 340B program. Compliance with all 340B Program requirements is mandatory. Once enrolled, covered entities are assigned a 340B identification number that vendors verify before allowing an organization to purchase 340B discounted drugs.

The Office of Pharmacy Affairs (OPA) maintains a database that may be used to run queries on covered entities by state, city, or zip code.

New registrations are accepted on a quarterly basis.  Check the HRSA website HRSA website for dates.
