Create the Best Team

1. Hire the Right Person

  • Communicate exactly what is required to be successful in the position.
  • Involve members of your team in the interview process to gain the benefit of their perspectives on specific tasks, and how a new personality might fit into your team.
  • Find someone who can potentially contribute beyond the position requirements.

2. Give the Right Employee the Right Task

  • Assess whether each of your employees is meeting, exceeding or not meeting expectations. If it’s the latter, consider whether they have sufficient training and coaching to be successful in their role. Health Mart University offers a variety of training resources that can prepare your staffers to perform more effectively or take on new roles.
  • Determine which tasks can be done by non-professional help and which require pharmacists' time.
  • Give individuals new projects beyond their core responsibilities.

3. Pay Attention to the Time

Assess how much time your employees are spending on their task. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you have a triage structure for answering the phone?
  • Who puts away the order? Your pharmacist or technician?
  • Is your technician or pharmacists doing basic data entry?

Assign a technician to ordering and receiving your Rx inventory.PLUS: Assign “ownership" of key responsibilities outside of the actual dispensing process to better match pay level to the task. For example, you may want to:

  • Designate one or two people to manage product returns and recalls. With two people focused on a task, you'll have the skills on hand, regardless of days off, shifts and other scheduling concerns.
  • Make one or two people responsible for completing open orders/partial fills every day.
